So you've seen a job advert in a newspaper, or online, and it looks like it could be your line of work. What do you do next?

Getting started

Make sure you've read the advertisement carefully. See what the employer wants. Evaluate whether you have the skills for the job. Decide what contribution you can offer. Write these down in a list. Now, you must compose a cover letter to your potential employers, telling them why you think you are good for the job.

In your application letter you must have:

  • The date
  • If possible, the name of the person who will be receiving the letter
  • The company name and address
  • A brief explanation of why you are applying for the job, and a short list of the qualities and skills you have to offer (which you would have worked out earlier)
  • You can also attach a detailed CV if required

Remember

  • Letters should be short - no more than one page
  • Be concise – don’t ramble!
  • Be honest – don’t exaggerate your qualifications
  • Be accurate - after you have finished writing your letter, ask a friend to check it for typographical errors. It is often difficult to see your own mistakes

Follow-up

If you sent you application letter by mail, call a week later to confirm receipt. If you sent by e-mail, call the next day.
