What are the chances of getting a job through an employment agency?

Your chance of getting a job using an employment or placement agency will depend on how closely your requirements match the kinds of jobs currently being handled by the agency, and the number of people seeking similar jobs.

How should you approach an employment agency?

You can telephone them  (you will find their telephone numbers under Employment Agencies) or pay a visit. There will be recruitment consultants ready to assist you. Ask what the market situation is like for someone with your kind of experience. You are bound to receive valuable information.

When you register with an agency your CV may be forwarded directly to a potential employer for consideration and possible short-listing. Or it may be considered by the agency’s recruitment consultants, depending on the employer’s requirements.

Do you pay for these services?

No, the service is free. If a company hires you, then a payment is worked out between the employment agency and the company.

Should I only use an employment agency?

Probably not. You need to remember that employment agencies do not have a monopoly of vacancies. They compete not only among themselves but also with other methods of recruitment, such as press advertising and online job sites.

Therefore you are advised to consider agencies simply as one of a number of possible sources of vacancies, and make use of as many as is necessary.
