The days of women being paid less than men should be well behind us, but wage inequality is alive and well in many workplaces.
By law, employers have to pay men and women the same wage for doing the same job.
Here are some steps you might consider if you suspect that the man doing the same job as you is being paid more than you.
- The first step to making sure you are getting equal pay is to find out how much men doing the same or similar jobs to you are getting paid. The easiest way to do this is simply to ask to see their pay slip.
- But if this isn't on the cards, you now have an alternative way of getting the information. You can ask your employer to fill out a questionnaire to explain and justify any differences between your pay and your male colleagues.
- If you are not satisfied with the response from your employer, then you can take your complaint to a labour or employment tribunal. The tribunal will provide you with advice.
